Hollows are the fallen souls that failed to get to Soul Society. Their appearance is characterized by a hole in the middle of the chest and a head of what seems to be wearing a thick white all-round mask. A Hollow is the other type of spirit that exists in this world besides the Pluses and they are considered the bad spirits.
A soul that is unable to enter Soul Society remains abandoned in the living world. When its heart starts to degenerate, this soul turns into a hollow. The instant this happens, the soul vanishes for a very short period and then re-assembles to complete the transformation into a Hollow. A Hollow attacks either living or dead beings in order to eat their souls. They do this to ease their suffering and to fill their own empty heart. Hollows have a habit to attack their own families out of loneliness and despair. When a Hollow looks for other souls to eat, it usually targets beings with a relatively high spiritual power. That is why Hollows are often drawn to locations in the world that have a high spiritual concentration.
exclusive Shinigami hint: if ever caught up in a situation where one must fight against a Hollow, aim for the head! That is their main weakness!
Stage of the Menos Grande. (Hollows, too, come in different stages.)
This creature, with the looks as if it stepped out of a medieval monastery nightmare, is created from hundreds of hollows piled up together. Even though its size is gigantic, it is rather brainless. The Menos Grande is another stage in which Hollows can turn to.
A Menos Grande likes to practice cannibalism, it doesn't shy away from eating other Hollows by the dozen.
