§ Information » Creatures » Quincy

The Quincy are humans who have the ability to sense Hollows. They are relatives of magic hunters and formed a clan that specialized in the war against Hollows. However, this clan was brought to near extinction 200 years ago. The ones responsible for this destruction were the Shinigami. At the time, this Quincy wipe-out rampage was considered necessary to prevent the world from eternal doom. And the explanation for that lies in the difference between a Quincy’s and Shinigami’s method of dealing with Hollows. Quincy get rid of a Hollow by completely killing it. Shinigami however, do not kill, but rather reap them. A Quincy’s justification for killing a Hollow is that a monster that goes around killing loved ones, is not to be spared. It needs to be killed in order to avenge the dead. But, what is left out of this reasoning, is that there is a fine balance between the spiritual world (Soul Society) and the living world. The soul of a person who died must transfer to ’the other side’ . At the same time, souls released from Soul Society are guided by Shinigami and born as living beings in this world. In this way, the ongoing exhange of souls keeps both worlds in balance. By merely killing Hollows, the spirit is not able to return to Soul Society, which eventually leads to too little souls in the after life. The balance would lean over to the living world and Soul Society would merge with the living world. As a result, life and death would get mixed into one. This fact (and this is just speculation because it is nowhere explicitly mentioned in Bleach), might not have been known by the Quincy. And this is in essence why the clan’s hunt for Hollows conflicted with the Shinigami’s Hollow policy. The Shinigami in the past did propose to the Quincy to stop their Hollow hunt and leave it to them. But, as the Quincy did not want to listen to this, the Shinigami found themselves turning to another option: complete Quincy existence wipe out. Afterwards, the very few surviving Quincy that the Shinigami knew off, were kept under strict surveillance.

WEAPONRY

The Quincy’s artillery is airborne, it is a bow and arrow, or more like a very fancy variation to it. The base of the bow and arrow lies usually in an item that can be worn by the individual on or around its hand or arm (like a glove or bracelet). Quincy use the spirit powers in their environment and combine it with their own power to fight.

The Sanrei Gloves
These gloves are a tool for the Quincy to train to the peak of power one can handle. Training to achieve this takes seven days and nights. The Sanrei Gloves have a ward that repels spiritrons. After a Quincy wears them, he will have a lot of trouble forming his own weapon, the bow. But, if this person manages to form the bow and hold it for seven days and nights, afterwards he (or she) will be at maximum power. This forced ability to collect spiritrons actually surpasses the limits a Quincy can handle. That is why taking off the gloves will result in an immense amount of power for a short while, followed by a short burst in which the Quincy loses all of his spiritual powers. The logic behind the huge power achievement is that a Quincy trains to absorb environmental spiritrons like freak, transcending the level of simply gathering spiritrons to aid in one’s spiritual power, taking it to the point where a Quincy is able to dominate the spiritrons and wield them upon own will.

COMBAT TECHNIQUES

Ransoutengai
This ability enables a Quincy to form lines out of spiritrons in his (or her) environment. In the case of serious paralysis or other disabling injuries in battle, these lines can attach to the body so that the body can still move around mechanically like a puppet. This technique was originally meant for older Quincy to still be able to fight Hollows with their old and deteriorated bodies. Ransoutengai is actually a long lost Quincy technique, considered by the Shinigami of Soul Society’s science and technology department as only existing in historical documents.

Other Quincy techniques involve one where spiritrons under a Quincy’s feet are gathered. A Quincy uses these spiritrons to move around at high speed. Usually this technique can only be practiced by high class Quincy.
