Soul Society is not only the place where souls of deceased people are sent to, it is also the place where the Shinigami live. However, in Soul Society there is a clear distinction between those who are Shinigami, and those who are plain souls. If Soul Society looked like a huge circle viewed from the sky, then the Shinigami would live in the center of that circle, this place is called the Seireitei. It can be seen as another inner circle. Around this inner circle, Seireitei, lie the outskirts of Soul Society, or Rukongai. Souls of deceased people that are reaped by a Shinigami and transfer to Soul Society come to reside in Rukongai.
The Rukongai exists of four portions, north, south, east and west. Each portion is divided into 80 areas. The higher the number of a certain area in the Rukongai, the worse the neigboorhood. The area’s of 78 and up are the worst, every day life there is about fighting, murdering and stealing. To prevent unwanted visits from these outskirts, Seireitei can only be entered through one of the four gates that seperate it from the rest of Soul Society. Each gate is guarded by an elite member of Soul Society.

A spirit, or soul, in Soul Society that wants to become a Shinigami, can try to enter the Shinigami School. This place pretty much resembles any other academic institute in this world. For those who are gifted in spiritual power it is a place to aim for a better life as a Shinigami. Apparently you’d have to pass three exams in order to graduate. After graduation, depending on the soul’s ability and strength, it is assigned to a certain position within a certain division. The Shinigami in Soul Society are basically all organized in divisions. There are a total of thirteen divisions and each of them is headed by a vice-captain and captain. They are at the same time the strongest of their division. The ranking system within a division is fairly simple: the stronger you are, thus the more combat power you’re got, the higher your seat. There is another side to this system though, if you’re a lucky soul and born into a noble family then you get privileges. These include being assigned to a certain division without having to pass an exam.
Once a soul has become a Shinigami and aspires to ascend the division ladder, there are in general three possibilities for it to become a division Captain. The first way is the most convential by taking a certain Taishyu test under the supervision of at least three Captains. After passing this test, the Shinigami will be titled Captain. The second way is to get referrals from six or more Captains, then to receive the approval for becoming Captain of at least another three of the seven remaining Captains. The final way is to defeat the current division Captain in combat while witnessed by 200 or more division members; the most well known individual who has acquired his title in this way is Captain Zaraki Kenpachi from the 11th division.
