A Shinigami translates to a Death God. It’s a spiritual being and can in theory only be seen by other spirits. In Bleach, a Shinigami is also called a Soul Reaper. That term pretty much refers to the Shinigami’s job, which is to reap souls. A Shinigami on duty enters the living world to perform Soul Burials. Soul Burial can be seen as sending the spirit of the deceased to the after life to prevent them from lingering in this world. The after life in this case would be a place called Soul Society.
Another part of a Shinigami’s job pertains to the extermination of hollows. They try to do this when a soul has not completely turned into a Hollow yet. By cutting a Hollow turned soul, its sins are washed away and the spirit can enter the after life. This can however, only be done when the sins that the souls committed were after they undergone the process of becoming a hollow. When a person’s soul is already stained by sins done when said person was alive, then those cannot be cleansed. As a result, such souls that are cut by Shinigami, enter Hell instead. Shinigami receive exact orders from Soul Society as to where and when a Hollow in the living world will appear.
