Aoyagi Ritsuka / Loveless
Ritsuka is the story’s troubled and tragic protagonist. For a 12 year old he is quite the grown up; head strong, intelligent and geared with an admirable perseverance. Ritsuka comes from an apparently normal household; a hard working father, a stay at home mom and a caring older brother. To him, his older brother Seimei is the world to him. After Seimei’s death, Ritsuka changes from a popular, out-going child into a distant and closed personality, relying on nobody but his own. One thing that isolates him from anyone around him is his abusive mother. His mother has had uncontrolled rage bursts even when his brother was alive. Despite this, Ritsuka still cares about her and is determined to stay at his mom’s side no matter what. As the Sacrifice in spell battles, Ritsuka carries the name ’Loveless’ that destiny has assigned him. In the story, I think you can say Ritsuka stands for strength in its purest sense. Also, Ritsuka’s hardships have helped him to develop and mature a little faster than his peers.
Aoyagi Seimei / Beloved
Seimei is Ritsuka’s older brother by 5 years. Seimei past away when Ritsuka was ten years old. His death was not a pleasant one and clouded in mystery. Local newspapers report his body was burned and found in the class room of an elementary school. To Ritsuka, Seimei was the perfect older brother. Tall, good looking, wise and very kind. Seimei protected Ritsuka against their violent mother and Ritsuka could always run to Seimei’s side for problems. All these personality traits though, are portrayed by Ritsuka’s memories of Seimei. As the story progresses, the mystery around Seimei partly dissolves and when it does, the ’best older brother one can wish for’ - image makes way for a side that is frighteningly dark and violent.
Shinonome Hitomi
Hitomi, or Shinonome-sensei, is the teacher of grade six at Yono Jounan elementary school. She is very much involved with her students’ well being, including Ritsuka’s. 23 years old and still carrying her cat ears and tail, she is considered as a bit odd by people around her. Granted, she appears rather child like emotional-wise and her goal is not to cry so often in front of others. Still, I think Hitomi as a character deserves admiration as she has set herself standards she does her best to live up to no matter what others have to say. As the story progresses, she gradually learns to confront her fears and uncertainties. Hitomi actually has so many virtues, someone with her purity of heart is a rarity nowadays, you know.
Kaidou Kio
Kio is one of the few good friends... no wait, make that the only good friend Soubi has. He is quite the jolly fellow and has the distinct trademark of a left ear subjected to fanatic piercing. He has seven on the side and with the expansion towards the top of his ear, he has a total of 14 ear piercings. Kio is Soubi’s self declared wife. He gets in quite the fits when he notices that Soubi is chasing someone else (Ritsuka) and is himself determined to pursue Soubi no matter what — well we’re talking about Kio here, so it really is not that serious as it sounds.
Hawatari Yuiko
Naïve, loud, clumsy and incredibly kind, this big-breasted girl is Ritsuka’s classmate and the first to approach Ritsuka on his first school day. Though she is often mistaken as a High Schooler due to her looks, she is heavily used by her so-called ’friends’ and lets them. She doesn’t realize this until she meets Ritsuka. Ritsuka brushes her off at first with the harsh words ’Those who use others are idiots, but those who allow themselves to be used are bigger idiots; I hate stupid girls’. But gradually, she manages to befriend Ritsuka while trying to hide the crush she has on him.
Yayoi
The cute and amusing classmate, Yayoi has a crush on Yuiko. He has already been turned down once by Yuiko, with the excuse that she doesn’t like guys that are shorter than her. When he sees Yuiko being good friends with Ritsuka (and, he’s shorter than Yuiko too!), he develops a dislike towards Ritsuka in a short time span. Despite this, he ends up being one of Ritsuka’s friends and a part of their little clique. Yayoi has ill health, he has difficulty breathing and needs an inhaler (most likely related to asthma).
