I. Essential Soubi: nice to meet you

In a world where the distinction between adult and not-adult is so cleary visible, the first impression of the ’earless’ Soubi is that he is an adult. He likes to smoke and does it whenever and wherever he pleases. For instance, when waiting in front of Ritsuka’s school, he bluntly lights up a cigarette. He smokes when he’s in Ritsuka’s room as well. Not the most responsible ’adult’ perhaps?

Soubi comes off as a carefree personage at first, somebody who has freedom in his hands and does with his time what he pleases. He is that in-control type, moving towards his goals in his own mysterious, though very decided ways. A character that is hard to read, somebody that doesn’t want to be read, and one that definitely does not aid others in providing clues towards it.

Soubi is quite imposing at first. The way he approaches Ritsuka in the beginning is very lightly said, rather suspicious. Saying that he used to be Seimei’s friend, throwing in his facial and eloquent charm, Soubi manages to claim Ritsuka’s prime attention very quickly. Now, what does such a handsome lad, who obviously has the ladies waiting in line, want with an under aged boy? I’m not a parent, but I would well understand any mom warning her kids to clear area at the sights of Soubi. Dangerous and disarmingly seductive, his suave manners send warning signals to question his intentions. At the same time though, they hint at a kind and loyal personality. Towards accusations of his best friend, Soubi decidedly replies: ’I’m not a pervert.’ In the beginning you want to respond a sarcastic ’OH?’, but as the story progresses and the patches of his isolating outer shield peel off, we get to understand the truth of these words. Soubi’s personality and his actions are his own way to deal with scars from his past. On the scale of messed up pasts, Soubi scores about an A minus.
