At first, Soubi’s interactions with Ritsuka evoke suspicion and mystery about his true self. A painful detail for Ritsuka here is that he finds out that Soubi has come to him because his Seimei ordered him to do so. Soubi even admits that his love statements are because of Seimei’s orders for Soubi to love Ritsuka. To Soubi, Seimei’s words are absolute and he obeys them even if Seimei is not there. Whether he does this intentionally or just because he is stuck to his principles, to Ritsuka this confession is rather painful. After all, how much frustrating is it to have a person say he loves you because he has to, not because he wants to?
Ritsuka’s description of Soubi after their initial engagements is willful, arrogant and a person who will hurt him in the end. Soubi in that stage, does live up to that image. He is someone that is not very honest with Ritsuka. Soubi for example, refuses to answer anything Ritsuka asks about the Seven Moons or anything that has to do with Seimei’s death in general, while apparently he knows more about it than he claims. Whenever Ritsuka is annoyed by this and pressures him to answer, Soubi brushes it off by doing some moves on Ritsuka that confuse the poor kid so much that the point of questioning is forgotten. A hug, a kind pat or stroke, they’re Soubi’s way to unarm the guarded Ritsuka and short stop him.
Besides orders from Seimei, there is a practical reason for not giving call to Ritsuka’s attempts to dig into Seimei’s past. As it later turns out, it probably was by means to protect Ritsuka from an ugly and rather harsh truth about his own brother.
Even though Soubi claimed he only came to Ritsuka on given orders, it is obvious that he unexpectedly has started to like Ritsuka, a lot. Ritsuka, despite his suspicions and doubt, must have sensed this positive feeling. Hardly noticing himself, Ritsuka, who first hated everyone and everything, lightens up bit by bit. He is in obvious better moods when he is near Soubi. He is also able to see the beautiful details in things around him again after Soubi entered his life.
