II. Starless Nights: hate you, need you, become you

One thing that rather surprised me, was the point when Soubi actually phoned Ritsu out of his own to ask him about battle strategies concerning his and Ritsuka’s upcoming opponents. Up to that point, I thought of Ritsu-sensei as someone who was out of Soubi’s life in present day, and only remained alive in his memories. But that little incident seemed to suggest that how much Soubi might despise his former teacher, he still kept in touch with him when necessary.

Upon Ritsuka’s request to go to Shichisei Gakuen to find out the truth about Seimei’s death, Soubi accompanies him and even meets Ritsu-sensei. How much time there has been between this meeting and the last time they saw each other, remains unclear. Judging from the words of Ritsu-sensei, who at one points remarks that Soubi is still ’cute’ as always, it could’ve been quite some time. The meeting in itself appears rather random; they both talk to each other while Soubi acts distant and unmoved.

Prior to this meeting, Soubi at one point states that Ritsu-sensei’s purpose is to hurt people by saying hurtful things. This trade, how unfortunate for Soubi it might be, is something he has taken over. Soubi’s skill for saying cold things at moments when kind words are better suited, is well developed. Now at least there’s a possible explanation for Soubi’s apparent careless and jackassery behavior at the beginning of the story.
