II. Starless Nights: scar tissue

Now this is just speculation, but even before Soubi witnesses Seimei still being alive, there was something in Soubi’s silence whenever Seimei was mentioned, that hinted Soubi maybe subconsciously felt all along that Seimei didn’t die, instead only disappeared for obscure reasons.

Still, after Soubi hears Seimei’s voice over the phone, he is more than devastated. Soubi can be found painting frantically the day after; a sign that he is heavily stressed. Soubi then asks Kio why he is so easily thrown away. Because if anyone decided to leave, they just go and he’ll be the one who’s always left behind. Soubi feels very much like garbage, something Kio contradicts fiercely, but the feeling dominates a then gloomy Soubi. Why yes, leave it to Seimei to make people feel miserable and unhappy for the rest of their lives.

Luckily for Soubi, Seimei’s younger brother, Ritsuka, is of different material. And it’s actually through him that Soubi tries to forget his dealings with Seimei. In a way, Soubi wants a savior in Ritsuka, and maybe in this way get some payback for what Seimei did. Now how can we blame Soubi’s eager interest in Ritsuka, it’s purely a silent cry for help. Probably not the most tactful way to do so perhaps, but still! As it turns out, the eagerly seeked support is very beneficial for both Ritsuka and Soubi.
