II. Starless Nights: disclosure

It is through Soubi’s best friend Kio that the first hints about what was going on between Seimei and Soubi get out in the open. When they were still a battle team, Soubi was the idiot that was happy with whatever someone did to him. Seimei in his turn, was the sadist, who was happy to do anything to anyone even if it included violence. Soubi got yelled at by Seimei and apparently he also got beaten. Among the scars this violence has left Soubi, the ones around his neck are the most well known. Any well thinking person can see that these scars are not simple scratches or random bruises; Seimei must’ve carved his destined name onto Soubi quite intentionally to make them last. Soubi however, still refers to the huge scar as a mere sign of owner ship.

Then Soubi one night, in a deserted house, finds a guy in a raincoat who is eavesdropping on Ritsuka’s house. Initially angry about the privacy infringement he stumbles upon, Soubi attacks both the guy’s face and listening devices. Then Soubi himself is up for an unasked for surprise: they guy he just punched, turns out to be Seimei’s new Fighter. Seimei is actually not dead at all, he just disappeared… leaving Soubi behind. In the meantime, he has taken another Fighter in Soubi’s place.

Seimei’s new Fighter, called Nisei, turns out to like hurting others as much as Seimei does. Nisei, while standing in front of Soubi, phones Seimei and let’s Soubi listen when Seimei picks up. He does this just to see how Soubi will react upon hearing Seimei’s voice. Soubi in that moment, just stands there with his head and arms down, unable to move like a lifeless doll. That moment of truth so bluntly pushed in his face must’ve been heart breaking for Soubi. Still afterwards he only feels urge to kill Nisei, for being Seimei’s new Fighter. In this case, I think a death wish in Seimei’s direction is a much better deserved one.

Really, Soubi becoming teamed up with Seimei is a matter of pure bad luck. The interplay between their two personalities pretty much resulted in Soubi’s misuse by Seimei, and it only got worse over time. Soubi allows Seimei to do whatever he wants, by behaving like the super loyal companion and always obeying orders like they are absolute rule. And Seimei, apparently devoid of any morals or conscience, grabs the opportunity to do so.
